Bushy Leaze started life as a Hospital School at the Lord Mayor Treloar Hospital, where many children were recuperating after major surgery, sometimes staying at the hospital for up to a year. Over time it became a special needs nursery based in a wooden cabin at the hospital site. It was named after the adjacent Bushy Leaze Wood. In 1996 the nursery moved to its present site in the town and became a Hampshire County Council maintained nursery school. At the same time it became fully inclusive, offering half the places to mainstream children from the local community and half to children with Special Educational Needs. In 2008 there was extensive building work in order to incorporate a Surestart Children’s Centre on site. A further multipurpose room was added in 2011 to extend the range of activities we could offer.
We aim for families to be resilient, happy, confident and resourceful so that they can achieve the very best they can and flourish.
Today, Bushy Leaze is a fully integrated Children and Families Centre. It is a happy and welcoming place to be and we offer a wide range of services and facilities for families and children, very much tailored to the needs of our community. We passionately believe that every child deserves the best possible start in life and that every family matters; every family is unique and special. We want to offer everyone opportunities to access whatever they need to help their family grow and develop. We strive to make a positive difference for families by working in partnership with parents, understanding that they are the most important influence on their child, and recognising the joys and challenges of family life. We hope that Bushy Leaze will continue to be a centre for the community that has lasting benefits for years to come.
We draw on best practice from the Early Years Foundation Stage and from Surestart. Every child matters to us and the ‘Every Child Matters’ themes underpin everything we do. They are:
- Being healthy
- Staying sate
- Enjoying and achieving
- Making a positive contribution
- Achieving economic well-being
Our key principles are that at Bushy Leaze we aim for everything we do to be:
A large number of regular and one-off events take place here in our centre and at our outreach venues. Some groups and events are run by us, some by other professionals or by parents. Please follow the link to our Calendar for more detail, or contact us if you would like to run or hold an event at our centre.
Our Single Equality Statement is now available to read and the Freedom of Information Statement is available on request.
